There are several reasons why your computer is slow, so there are also several ways to speed up your pc… Every problem has its solution, in principle, the whole thing is to find it!
The most common reasons for slowing down:
- PC too old
- Infected computer
- PC not optimized
- Software incompatibility
Your computer is too old
For PCs too old, there is no miracle, you have to change the components, they are no longer powerful enough (but you can still apply the tricks).
You should know that computers are evolving quite fast and their power is increasing very fast. And what usually happens is that software publishers add functions over the years in their software updates, which certainly makes them more interesting, but also more power-hungry.
I’ll give you a few methods just to optimize and speed up your Pc, because you should know that a computer is not optimized by default, it was designed to be usable by as many people as possible, so that some functions that are enabled by default are not necessarily used by everyone and consume resources for nothing!
Your Pc is slowed down because not to the maximum of its capabilities! And for laptops, reduced battery!
First, let’s make room on the hard drive, because a full hard drive slows down the PC because it continually moves the files within it. The less space there is, the less location choice it has, and the more space it will have to look for or there is still space! I’m talking about conventional hard drives, not SSDs. (To optimize the SSD, I invite you to read the article about it. )
Then we’ll re-arrange the files; as the uses go by, the files fragment and put them everywhere…
It must be understood that when the files are too fragmented, it must move too much to bring together the various fragments scattered, resulting in a decrease in performance …
Your PC is infected
Unfortunately, this is often the case. Malware slows down your pc because it very often consumes your resources to carry out malicious acts.
In order to have good protection against malware, I recommend the Kaspersky antivirus in free version which is from my point of view ample enough.
Above all, do not make the mistake of having 2 antivirus in real time active at the same time, it risks greatly reducing the velocity of your computer but also reduce the protections of your computer because of the presence of conflicts!
Your pc is not optimized
Accelerate by cleaning
CCleaner is a very efficient and well-known cleaner. It is also light. By cleaning your pc, your chances of speeding up your pc increase.
To download here, install it, and launch it.
Once done, you’ll have 2 tabs left: “Windows” and “Applications.” Normally, there is nothing to set up, but some people do not want to lose the history of their internet browsing… If this is your case, choose what you want to remove or not from the “Internet Explorer” section of the “Windows” tab, and in the “Applications” tab and the same for the “Firefox/Mozilla” section.
If you still want to keep files that you sent to the trash, you need to uncheck “Drain the trash” in the “System” section.
To start cleaning, click “scan” and then “clean”. And voila, you did a little cleaning!
Be aware that you can also improve CCleaner easily!
Accelerate by defragmenting
On a hard drive, your files are separated into small pieces and scattered all over the place. Accelerating your pc is done in part by grouping these parts and placing them one after the other. Defragmentation is very useful for conventional hard drives, but is strongly discouraged from SSDs. But any good recent defragmentation software knows the difference between an HDD and an SSD, allowing you to avoid doing a stupid thing.
Moreover, to have a very big acceleration of your pc, is to change for an SSD! It’s an investment, a little technical, but not especially complicated, but this change will guarantee you blows on an acceleration of the performance of your pc!
Windows by default incorporates a defragmenter, but I always found it not very effective. Since I only use SSDs, I no longer defragment, but there was a time for Auslogics Disk Defrag was for me quite effective.
Defragmentation can take a few minutes to much longer, depending on the percentage of defragmentation and the size of your storage media. There are many others but personally this one is the one I appreciated the most: very light, does a great job or better compared to other very well-known defragmenter that I tried (O-O Defrag, Diskeeper, Defraggler to name but a few), uses little resource and is in French!
Les services Windows
The services are Windows programs that work in the background and offer some features more or less useful to the system: network, web server, smart card support, antivirus, firewall, etc.
Many unnecessary services are thus started and consume system resources unnecessarily. To speed up your computer, you need to turn off unnecessary services.
To open the Windows services console:
- Start menu
- in the “Search” field, type “services.msc,” click on it.
For each service, there are 3 types of start-up:
- Automatic: The service is started automatically when Windows starts.
- Automatic:The service is started after a few minutes.
- Manual: The service is started when an app or other service needs it
- Disabled: The service will not be started.
Don’t do stupidity by putting all services in “Manual” or “Deactivated”, some services require to be in “Automatic”!
In order to avoid too much loading time for this article, I put the 4 long tables regarding services separately:
Accelerating extinction
A little trick to turn off the PC in record time! N
o risk of data loss or anything else.
All you have to do is change a simple value in the registry:
- Start Icon
- Run and type Regedit, then Ok.
- A new window opens.
- Then in the left column, go so far:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control
Click Control, and look in the right column, you should see the key: WaitToKillServiceTimeout
Double click on it, and change the value to 1000.
Close the registry editor and restart to apply your change!
The default is 5000, which means Windows waits by default 5 seconds before closing a program that doesn’t respond. By changing the value to 1000, it will be 1 second.
Accelerating the recovery
There’s also another trick that lets you start and turn off the PC faster: hibernation.
It keeps your desktop and your apps in memory as it is! Even if your pc is no longer powered up.
In short, you save time in start-up and stop! Alas, this trick requires at least 2 gigas of free space!
For those interested:
You can set up your computer’s Walk/Stop button to go into hibernation directly after pressing the stop button!
- Configuration panel
- Material and audio
- below “Power Options”
- Click “Change the behavior of power buttons”
- and there you can change their action!
Speed up start-up
The more programs launched at the start of Windows, the slower your computer will be to start… So just lighten the boot to speed up Windows!
For this:
- Start Icon
- Type msconfig into the search field or run
- In the window that appears, click on the 4th tab called “Start” you will see the list of programs that starts at start-up!
- Uncheck those you find useless for them to launch right from the start, then click Ok.
You can also go through the task manager, using the combination of keys:
- Ctrl – Shift – Esc
And that’s it, with this trick series, your Windows PC should be faster already!
