As you certainly know, you have 2 types of hard drives: internal and external. Interns can be converted to external hard drives by means of enclosures or by using docking stations. And this is one of the docking stations of the Inateck brand that I was able to test, the FD1005, and that I will make you a report. inateck FD1005 HDD-SSD-USB3

The Inateck FD1005 is:

  • a docking station
  • Management of classic HDD HDDs in SATA 1, 2 and 3, as well as SSD!
  • Is capable of taking HDD and SSD in 2.5 or 3.5 inches (so those of laptops and stationary computers)
  • Compatible with hard drive up to 4 TB!
  • In USB 3.0, up to a maximum speed of 5Gbps! (mini USB/USB). Compatible with USB 2 and lower ports
  • Compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 (32 and 64 bits), Mac
  • Hot-swap, plug & play, no additional drivers needed
  • LED indicator
  • Power supply area 12V/4
  • Ultra-simple operation

The test

The design

Very simple and classic, rectangular rectangle black in matte, with a top outer band in glossy black. A blue led on the top side indicates the activity. The top surface contains a damper for setting up a 3.5 inch hard drive. Basically, you do not have a damper for a hard drive in 2.5 inches, which I personally find damage as well for the dust as for the stability of the 2.5 inches because this one has a bit of play and I think with a flap at the back , this game would have disappeared (but I do not know what it would have been vibration in this case…), but you have a flap that lowers to let pass a 3.5 inches. 2 valves, one going forward for the 2.5 inches and one going backwards for the 3.5 inches would have, I think, been welcome and not a single one for the 3.5 inches. inateck fd1005 station home hard drive inateck FD1005

The installation

Ultra-simple: you plug the USB cable, the mains socket and your hard drive, you turn it on, and hop, the computer installs direct the necessary driver in less than 30sec and gives you access to your hard drive almost instantly! The hard drive tested is a 500 Gigas, but no worries, I had access to everything directly, not even time to say “phew!”. It contained 3 partitions, and you have access to your 3 partitions as if it were different hard drives.

The speed

The speed has not been tested, for the good and simple reason that it depends on the hard drive in question! Of course, the USB 3 also intervenes as well as other settings like the chip that is embedded there, but once you are on that it’s from USB 3, the rest of the speed depends mainly on the hard drive!

Vibration

They exist, which is quite normal, but they are minimal and do not get along.

The use of

Although not shown anywhere, this docking station surprised me by the fact that it is able to stop on its own after exactly 10 minutes to save both energy and hard drive wear! And is also able to relaunch just by going into the file Explorer! Anyway, like a computer. A great point! Note: the SATA interface does not support the hot plug, so as to avoid loss of data and damage to the device, it is strongly advised to eject the hard drive and turn off the docking station before removing it.

Conclusion

The conclusion is quite simple: an excellent HDD/SSD docking station, the Inateck FD1005, which I warmly recommend if you need it on your desktop! Only missing for my taste, a second valve, but level functionality, installation and design, nothing to complain!   Link: http://www.inateck.com/fr/inateck-fd1005-usb-3-0-hdd-docking-station/Amazon: http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00HMVKDIE test-Avis-appreciation-critique-review-2
